Von Miller Cowboys Jersey Post: What It Really Means

Von Miller is making his offseason interest in the Dallas Cowboys public. On Wednesday, the veteran edge rusher posted a photo of himself in a No. 24 Cowboys jersey accompanied by a “Shhh” emoji. It came two days after he told SB Nation‘s R.J. Ochoa that “it would be great to be a Dallas Cowboy.” The story of the jersey post was reported by NBC Sports’ Charean Williams.

Miller is currently a free agent following a one-year stint with the Washington Commanders, his most recent team. No deal with Dallas, or anyone else, has been reported.

    Miller’s Connection to Dallas

Miller does not have a prior playing history with the Cowboys, but his personal ties to the area are deep. He grew up in DeSoto, Texas, roughly 24 miles from AT&T Stadium, and played college football at Texas A&M before being drafted by the Denver Broncos.

In 14 NFL seasons with the Broncos, Rams, Bills, and Commanders, Miller has accumulated 138.5 career sacks. He won a Super Bowl with the Broncos, earning MVP honors, and another with the Rams. His nine sacks last season, playing only 37 percent of defensive snaps for Washington, were his most since 2021.

The post shows Miller in a Cowboys jersey with no additional explanation beyond the emoji. Two days before it went up, Miller spoke directly to Ochoa about his interest in Dallas.

“I grew up here in Dallas,” Miller said. “I’ve always had a special place in my heart for the Dallas Cowboys. If I played for the Dallas Cowboys this year, I [would] only have to drive 20 minutes to work. This would be the first time that my mom and dad don’t have to fly to every single game. My mom has been to every single game that I’ve ever played in, and she’ll be able to drive to all the home games, and you know, I got so many family members here. My kids are here. My family is here; [my] girlfriend is here. Everybody’s here. It’d just be easy to work it out, so you never really know.”

Does Dallas Have a Need at Edge Rusher?

Pass rush depth is a legitimate area of need for the Cowboys, and Miller fits the profile of a veteran situational addition on a short-term deal. At his age and snap count from last season, he would not be expected to play every down, but 37 percent of snaps and nine sacks is a real contribution.
