Vikings Icon John Randle Opposes Pursuit of Kirk Cousins or Derek Carr This Offseason

    NFL

After observing JJ McCarthy’s 2025 season, it’s clear that confidence in him as a long-term QB for the Minnesota Vikings isn’t high. His performance was lacking, showcasing significant challenges typical of an inexperienced quarterback, despite not being a rookie. McCarthy’s inability to manage the ball effectively led to a subpar ratio of 12 interceptions versus 11 touchdowns, compounded by his absence due to injury for seven games.

Amid discussions about future roster moves, the Vikings might be eyeing seasoned quarterbacks like Kirk Cousins or Derek Carr to solidify their QB situation for the 2026 season. The idea of bringing back Cousins is particularly notable since the Atlanta Falcons are projected to release him before his $67.9 million salary becomes fully guaranteed on March 13. Notably, Cousins enjoyed some of the most successful moments of his career while playing for the Vikings just two years ago.

Derek Carr presents a more intriguing option. After sitting out the last season, he has been engaging in podcasting with his brother, David, even hinting at a comeback. Carr aims to join a team with Super Bowl ambitions. However, Vikings Hall of Famer John Randle expressed skepticism about both potential QB replacements for McCarthy.

“I’m not a big fan of Derek Carr,” Randle stated on SKOR North. “Talking about Kirk Cousins coming back, I’m like, ‘Dude, we’ve been down that road. No. We want to move on from you.’ … You have won what, maybe one playoff game? I want more.”

It’s tough to argue against the opinion of a Minnesota legend like Randle. Both Carr and Cousins have proven track records, yet there’s a limit to how we expect them to perform moving forward. Still, given McCarthy’s lackluster display last season, it’s arguable that either could be a more favorable option for immediate success.

Entering year five under Kevin O’Connell, the Vikings face critical choices. After a disappointing season, the organization must decide between pursuing victory or opting for a rebuild. A lackluster season like last year has no place in their vision. They either chase the Lombardi Trophy aggressively or aim for a strong draft position.

Nonetheless, it wouldn’t be surprising if the Vikings allow McCarthy more opportunities next season to validate his potential. He was their 10th overall pick and the team expects him to become their franchise QB. Presently, achieving that reality seems challenging. Yet, O’Connell has a reputation for transforming QB projects into competent performers.

Even so, acquiring either Cousins or Carr could serve as a wise precaution. It’s doubtful Carr would return to play for a struggling team that missed the playoffs last year. Cousins appears to be the more feasible choice, though fan opinions vary. Not every supporter is enthusiastic about reuniting with a former player.
