Vic Fangio’s Departure: Eagles Icon Minimizes Impact of Defensive Coordinator’s Exit

Rumors are swirling around Philadelphia Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio, who is considering retirement after a distinguished 25-year career in the NFL. At 67, his exit would significantly impact an Eagles defense that has thrived in recent seasons under his strategic guidance.

Fangio’s first season saw the Eagles’ defense dominate, finishing first in total defense and second in scoring defense. Although the previous year started with some struggles, by midseason they were limiting opponents to just 14.3 points per game after the bye. His ability to adapt and improve the unit is clear, and the team is eager to retain his expertise.

Former Eagles running back LeSean McCoy weighed in on the possibility of Fangio’s departure, acknowledging its potential repercussions but also emphasizing the depth of talent on the roster. He pointed out that the Eagles have a strong group of players who may be able to sustain their defensive prowess, even without Fangio at the helm.

“We’re definitely going to miss him if he decides to retire. But on that end, the players we have on defense, coaching matters for sure. But with the players we have, I’m not going to be surprised if they go out there and still dominate the same way,” McCoy said during a recent episode of the Speakeasy podcast.

Last season, four Eagles defensive players earned Pro Bowl selections, with two making the All-Pro first team. The lineup is brimming with elite talent capable of shifting the momentum of games. Stars like Zack Baun, Cooper DeJean, Quinyon Mitchell, and Jalen Carter are central to this defensive strength.

This is why McCoy feels confident in discussing Fangio’s potential retirement. While acknowledging Fangio’s exceptional coaching ability and extensive experience, he believes the players have the capability to perform at a high level regardless of who is coaching them.

McCoy also highlighted that there may already be a strong candidate to take Fangio’s place, should he decide to step down.

“But you know who I do like? Jim Schwartz. You bring him back over there to Philadelphia. I’m not trying to compare him and Vic, but I think he’s really, really good,” McCoy remarked.

Schwartz, who recently coached with the Cleveland Browns, played a vital role in developing one of the league’s strongest defensive units. After the Browns secured Todd Monken as their new head coach, Schwartz expressed dissatisfaction and plans to leave. Although reconciling with the team is a possibility, it wouldn’t be surprising to see him pursue opportunities elsewhere.

If Fangio retires, Schwartz would be a prime candidate for the Eagles’ defensive coordinator position. He previously held that role during the Eagles’ 2017 Super Bowl victory, demonstrating a successful legacy within the organization.

However, Schwartz’s current focus appears to be on landing a head coaching role. His previous stint with the Detroit Lions ended after five seasons, leaving him eager for a new opportunity at the top.

As we monitor the situation regarding Fangio’s retirement, it’s important to note he remains the highly valued defensive coordinator for the Eagles and one of the highest-paid non-head coaches in the league.
