Sutherland, who was a promising player appearing in four games for the Panthers during the 2025 season, came from Iowa City. He left a notable mark during his time in high school, where he earned a second-team all-state selection as a senior at Iowa City High School, and also participated in basketball and baseball.
“I’m heartbroken,” stated UNI football coach Todd Stepsis in a heartfelt release. “No words can express my condolences to Adam, Jill, and Georgia—his parents and sister. Parker represented everything we aspire to achieve in a UNI football Panther. His skills on the field were exceptional, but it was his character, humility, and passion that truly set him apart. We are saddened that our time together was short, and we will honor the brightness he brought to our team.”
UNI athletics director Megan Franklin echoed these sentiments, expressing deep sorrow over the loss. “This is a heartbreaking day for our Panther Athletics family. We are devastated, but we have a strong Panther community. We will support the Sutherland family through this grieving process,” Franklin remarked.
The UNI football team is set to begin their 2026 season against Eastern Washington on September 5. However, it will undoubtedly be a time marked by reflection and remembrance of one of their own.
