The Falcons and Eagles recently executed a trade that shifts safety Sydney Brown to Atlanta. This move not only bolsters the Falcon’s roster but allows Philadelphia to secure a slight advantage in the upcoming 2026 NFL Draft. Here are the specifics of the deal, as noted by CBS Sports’ NFL insider Jonathan Jones:
- Falcons receive: Safety Sydney Brown, 2026 fourth-round pick (No. 122 overall), 2026 sixth-round pick (No. 215 overall)
- Eagles receive: 2026 fourth-round pick (No. 114 overall), 2026 sixth-round pick (No. 197 overall)
Sydney Brown, age 25, was selected in the third round by the Eagles in 2023. In his rookie season, he participated in 14 games, starting six, before a late-season ACL injury sidelined him. He made a comeback in Week 7 of the 2024 season, contributing in 11 regular-season games and all four playoff matches—primarily in special teams—helping the Eagles secure their Super Bowl championship. In the 2025 season, he played all 17 games (three starts), again focusing mainly on special teams. Overall, he was involved in 22% of Philadelphia’s defensive snaps last year.
Brown initially demonstrated his potential with a remarkable 99-yard interception return touchdown against the Cardinals. However, shortly after, he suffered an ACL tear which impacted the remainder of his rookie campaign and delayed part of his second year. Last season, he became a vital part of the special teams unit, even returning a blocked punt for a touchdown.
This trade comes at a time when the Eagles have a pressing need at safety. With Reed Blankenship signing with the Texans, Andrew Mukuba is now the only returning starter for the reigning NFC East champions as he embarks on his second season.
The Falcons, on the other hand, feature veteran Jessie Bates III alongside promising second-year player Xavier Watts in their safety lineup. Brown, who shares a brotherly connection with Bengals running back Chase Brown, is expected to provide significant contributions as a backup while enhancing the special teams unit under the guidance of new coach Kevin Stefanski.
Grade: B
Brown was regarded as a top-100 prospect according to CBS Sports’ 2023 NFL Draft prospect rankings, ultimately being drafted 66th overall by the Eagles. While he showcased flashes of potential, he primarily functioned in a special teams capacity. However, his new environment could allow him to expand beyond that role. Pro Football Focus grades indicate that while he has had his ups and downs, he achieved a commendable tackling grade in 2025. For a third or fourth safety, options like Brown hold promise.
As a seasoned special teams contributor, Brown enters the final year of his rookie contract at an affordable cost. The Falcons indeed made a sensible move in acquiring a former third-round pick who is only 25, at minimal expense.
Grade: C+
The Eagles have kept a low profile during the offseason. The Riq Woolen addition on a one-year contract looks promising, with a cornerback trio of Quinyon Mitchell, Cooper DeJean, and Woolen potentially excelling. However, at safety, Mukuba needs to demonstrate significant improvement in his second season and prove his capability to remain healthy. The other starting safety currently may not even be on the roster.
Philadelphia has seen considerable talent depart, including Jaelan Phillips to the Dolphins, Nakobe Dean to the Raiders, and Blankenship to the Texans. Losing Brown further complicates their safety situation. Does moving up in the draft justify letting go of a player who provided solid depth and special teams skills?
This trade, while not monumental, is a calculated move. Brown hasn’t been a consistent defensive asset, and enhancing draft position for a player whose contributions have waned can be logical. Philadelphia did re-sign safety Marcus Epps and added special teamer J.T. Gray shortly after the trade.
Nonetheless, the Eagles’ strategy of further chipping away at their defense raises eyebrows, especially in an offseason marked by losses. Future moves, possibly involving an A.J. Brown trade, might help the Eagles recuperate some defensive talent. For now, Howie Roseman will need to execute a solid strategy in the upcoming draft and ensure astute selections in free agency.
