Patrick Mahomes has undeniably become a cornerstone of success for the Kansas City Chiefs, leading the team to three Super Bowl titles, earning two league MVP awards, and creating unforgettable moments that fans treasure. Yet, despite his remarkable achievements, a local sports radio personality has recently labeled the star quarterback an “embarrassment,” taking direct aim at Mahomes’ physique.
This surprising jab came from Kevin Kietzman, a seasoned voice in Kansas City sports talk. During a recent episode of his podcast, Kietzman didn’t hold back, commenting on photos that surfaced from Mahomes’ Fourth of July vacation. In those shots, Mahomes seems to be reveling in some summer fun, but according to Kietzman, he might be enjoying it a bit too much.
“Vacation photos are popping up of Patrick Mahomes and he looks fat,” Kietzman stated bluntly, adding, “I’m gonna say it and I’m gonna tell you the truth. That’s why you hit the play button. He’s an embarrassment.” His words could easily be interpreted as tough love, with Kietzman calling for Mahomes to take a step back from fast food and ramp up his fitness regime.
“Guys, you’re a $500 million quarterback. Look, your belly would be out of place even at my pool with my 60-year-old friends,” Kietzman continued. “Stop the fast food. Do a sit-up. Do something!” It’s clear that Kietzman’s criticism comes from a place of high expectations fueled by admiration for Mahomes’ talent—after all, how could anyone not want the best for someone they regard as the greatest quarterback of the generation?
However, Kietzman’s comments haven’t gone without their fair share of backlash. Many fans and critics have rallied around Mahomes, pointing out that he’s just returned from yet another Super Bowl and made six consecutive Pro Bowl appearances. For a 28-year-old quarterback—especially one known for his incredible athleticism—it’s perplexing to some why we’re focusing on his off-season body rather than celebrating his relentless success on the field.
And let’s face it: while we might not be the ones throwing game-winning touchdowns in the Super Bowl, we can relate. Everyone has their own way of enjoying downtime—whether it’s indulging in a late-night taco run or lounging around with friends during the summer. Mahomes himself has even embraced the “dad bod” persona in the past, using it as a bargaining chip in promotional endeavors. It becomes a part of who he is, showing that relatability can walk hand-in-hand with greatness.
In the end, as long as Mahomes continues to deliver on the field, his critics may have to come to terms with the idea that a little indulgence isn’t the end of the world. After all, greatness may sometimes come packaged with late-night fast food, and who hasn’t been there?
So the next time you find yourself enjoying a slice of pizza or a burger after a long week, remember: even the best can have their fun, and they too balance the demands of excellence with the joy of living.
