Matthew Stafford has put to rest any lingering doubts about his NFL journey. He confirmed his return to the Los Angeles Rams for the 2026 season, putting an end to speculation about his future.
The Super Bowl-winning quarterback shared this news while accepting the MVP Award at NFL Honors on Thursday night. He took a moment to express gratitude to those who contributed to his success. Highlighting his four daughters, Stafford emphasized that they would again be cheering for him from the sidelines next season.
“Chandler, Sawyer, Hunter, Tyler — I’m thrilled to share both the joys and lessons of this game with you guys. It’s all about you,” Stafford said to his daughters as they stood by his side.
“You are the best cheerleaders I could ask for. I appreciate it deeply. I’m excited to have you at the games, and I can’t wait for your support next year as we tackle the competition. See you all next season. Let’s hope I’m not at this event, but gearing up for another game at SoFi (Stadium).”
This remark sparked a big reaction from the audience, which included many of his teammates who stood and cheered enthusiastically.
Throughout the season, questions about Stafford’s future lingered, even as he played at an MVP-worthy level. At 37, he entered the season having dealt with a back injury that raised concerns about his durability.
However, he proved his critics wrong, leading the league with 4,707 passing yards, averaging 276.9 yards per game, and throwing 46 passing touchdowns. His efforts guided the Rams to a strong 12-5 record in the regular season, followed by playoff victories over the Panthers (wild card) and Bears (divisional).
Although the Rams faced disappointment in the NFC Championship against the Seahawks, Stafford consistently showcased his ability to deliver under pressure for coach Sean McVay’s team.
The veteran quarterback still has one year remaining on his impressive $84 million contract signed ahead of the 2025 season. He will receive a base salary of $16 million for the 2026 season.
McVay faced inquiries about Stafford’s status with the team following the 31-27 loss to the Rams. His response highlighted his confidence in Stafford’s capabilities.
“If he still wants to play, what kind of question is that?” McVay replied, visibly frustrated. “We’ve been fully engaged. If he wants to continue, he’s still performing at an exceptionally high level.”
“He’s the MVP of the league. With all due respect to others, this guy plays at a level that sets him apart.”
