Kenny Minchey Chooses Nebraska: The Next Chapter for the Former Notre Dame QB

Irish Illustrated

The Nebraska Cornhuskers have secured their new quarterback from the NCAA transfer portal. Former Notre Dame signal-caller Kenny Minchey has officially committed to Nebraska, as reported by CBS Sports’ Matt Zenitz.

A highly regarded four-star recruit, Minchey was ranked as the No. 12 quarterback in the 2023 signing class. He challenged C.J. Carr for the starting position at Notre Dame ahead of the upcoming 2024 season. Although he ultimately lost the competition, Minchey showcased his abilities, making the contest closer than many anticipated.

Insiders revealed that the competition was quite balanced, with one source indicating it was a “50-50” situation where opinions varied on who should get the nod.

Minchey began to gain favor among the coaching staff for his reliable performance, contrasting with Carr’s tendency to exhibit both impressive plays and occasional issues with ball security.

Landing a quarterback with Minchey’s potential is a promising development for Nebraska. Despite limited playing time at Notre Dame, Minchey did make some appearances, completing 20 of 26 passes for 196 yards without any touchdowns or interceptions.

On the ground, he showed his athleticism by contributing with 84 rushing yards and one touchdown.

As he makes his way to Lincoln, Minchey will be expected to elevate Nebraska’s performance. Following two consecutive 7-6 seasons under coach Matt Rhule, the program is focused on making strides toward having a shot at the Big Ten title.

Minchey steps into this role following the departure of Dylan Raiola, a former five-star recruit who, despite his high expectations, did not pan out as anticipated during his time at Nebraska. Raiola entered the transfer portal after two seasons with the Huskers.

Speculation about his exit intensified when his brother, Dayton, decommitted from Nebraska last November. Additionally, Rhule terminated the contract of Donovan Raiola, Dylan’s uncle and the offensive line coach, at the end of the season.
