Jaxson Dart stood out as arguably the most promising quarterback from last year’s draft class. However, his aggressive playing style, particularly as a runner, exposed him to frequent hits that resulted in multiple injuries. Over his rookie season, the New York Giants quarterback underwent concussion evaluations a staggering five times and missed two games due to confirmed cases.
This reckless approach was precisely what Jon Gruden and other coaches were concerned about when Dart entered the league. In a viral YouTube video from Gruden’s QB Class, the coach openly criticized Dart’s dangerous style of play. Gruden urged him to rethink his strategy to avoid injuries.
As anticipated, Gruden’s fears were validated during Dart’s rookie year. Yet, as we look ahead to the 2026 season, Dart remains unfazed. He firmly believes in his current approach and has no plans to change.
“It’s very situational-based. First or second down, it’s crucial to protect our bodies. We should avoid unnecessary hits,” Dart shared on the Ross Tucker Podcast, adding,
“In crucial moments, I guarantee I’m not going to be the one who slides before that first down marker. I’ll give everything I have to secure that first down.”
Numerous instances during Dart’s rookie season showcased this mentality. A particularly striking example occurred in Week 13 when he faced the New England Patriots. While scrambling to gain extra yards for a first down, a hit from Patriots defender Christian Elliss sent Dart crashing into his own bench. It was worth noting that this happened on second and thirteen.
The forceful tackle sparked tensions on the field. Though it was a legal hit that went unflagged, Dart’s choice to remain in bounds and risk injury for the gain highlighted his determination. Yet he remains steadfast in this approach, stating he won’t let up.
“That’s the way I’ve always played, so why would I change?”
“I think that it’s very situational based…”
“I promise I’m NOT going to be the one that’s going to slide before that first down marker, I’m gonna give it EVERYTHING…”

Dart has ample reasons to consider modifying his playing style. The primary risk is a potential injury that could derail his career, jeopardizing both his finances and his legacy.
It will be intriguing to observe how long Dart maintains this “tough guy” demeanor on the field. There’s no shame in opting to slide and preserve his health, a strategy embraced by many successful players, Josh Allen included.
