Jaguars Lock In Former First Overall Pick with a $110 Million, Four-Year Contract Featuring $77 Million Guaranteed

The Jacksonville Jaguars have made significant roster decisions this offseason, including the surprising move to allow running back Travis Etienne and linebacker Devin Lloyd to enter free agency. This strategy reveals a focused plan to enhance their defensive lineup by investing in rising stars like Travon Walker.

Walker, the first overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, has recently secured a lucrative four-year contract extension valued at $110 million, which includes $77 million guaranteed and $50 million fully guaranteed upon signing. The investment in Walker is not without reason. After a quieter rookie season—where he recorded just 3.5 sacks—he rebounded in 2023 and 2024, achieving 10.0 and 10.5 sacks, respectively. This surge in performance placed him 12th in the league for total sacks during that span. However, his 2025 season mirrored his rookie struggles, as he again ended with just 3.5 sacks over 14 games, indicating inconsistency that the Jaguars hope to overcome in future seasons.

Walker currently stands out in Jaguars history, sitting sixth in the all-time list with 36 career tackles for loss and ninth with 27.5 career sacks. His career journey is often compared to that of Aidan Hutchinson, the second overall pick in the same draft class. Hutchinson has achieved remarkable success with 43.0 career sacks—among the top in the NFL since 2022—and earned a four-year, $180 million extension with the Detroit Lions, reflecting his standout performances.

Jacksonville’s management clearly believes in Walker’s untapped potential, prioritizing his growth alongside established players like two-time Pro Bowl edge rusher Joshua Hines-Allen. This duo is poised to be the backbone of the Jaguars’ defense for years to come. Following a notable 13-4 season and an AFC South division title under new head coach Liam Coen in 2025, the Jaguars are banking on Walker to find consistency and solidify their defensive strength.

In summary, the Jacksonville Jaguars’ commitment to Travon Walker illustrates their strategy to build a formidable defense by maximizing the potential of key players. As the team evolves under new leadership, the success of Walker will be crucial in determining their trajectory in the competitive landscape of the NFL.
