Ikem Ekwonu is ahead of schedule, and the Carolina Panthers believe he has a real shot at playing this season. NFL Network‘s Ian Rapoport reported that Panthers GM Dan Morgan expressed optimism about Ekwonu’s return from a torn patellar tendon.
Ekwonu was placed on the PUP list as training camp opened, alongside DT Tershawn Wharton.
Serious Injury With Promising Recovery Timeline
Ekwonu tore his patellar tendon in Carolina’s wild-card loss to the Los Angeles Rams in January, leaving the game after just eight offensive snaps. Patellar tendon tears require reconstructive surgery and typically carry a 6–12 month recovery timeline.
Six months after the injury, Morgan’s tone suggests the rehab is ahead of schedule. “He’s in a really good place. The doctors and the training staff, they’re really feeling good about where he’s at right now. It’s just a credit to Ickey and who he is, attacking this rehab.”
Training Camp PUP Status
Landing on the PUP list to open camp is expected for a player in Ekwonu’s situation. It doesn’t close the door on a 2026 return. Players on the PUP list can be activated once they’re cleared, and doing so before the season begins costs nothing. The real signal will come around the roster cutdown period, and whether Carolina moves him to injured reserve or keeps him on the active roster.
Patellar tendon rehab is demanding. Some players have managed their recovery timelines well enough to return to close to full form, as seen with other NFL players recovering from serious knee injuries. The work Ekwonu has put into this rehab appears to be paying off.
Ekwonu’s Value to Offense Can’t Be Overstated
Ekwonu was the sixth overall pick in the 2022 draft and has been the Panthers‘ starting left tackle since then. He’s QB Bryce Young‘s blindside protector, the most important position on an offensive line that has already been under pressure to perform.
Losing him for the full season would force Carolina to patch together left tackle solutions that don’t come close to what Ekwonu provides at his best. His return – even at midseason – would be significant for the offense.
