Coach Jason Brown Calls Out Patrick Mahomes As Overrated, Drawing Parallels To LeBron James

Losing his third consecutive Super Bowl is definitely taking a toll on Patrick Mahomes. The Eagles’ defense effectively dismantled Mahomes, showcasing performances that pushed him away from the realm of extraordinary and straight into the territory of the ordinary quarterback that some doubters have begun to believe he might be. The kind of scrutiny he faces now is reminiscent of what has been said about basketball’s LeBron James — but not in a good way.

Similar to LeBron, Mahomes has secured multiple championships and carved out an impressive résumé worthy of a Hall of Fame induction. Yet, in both cases, the title of the greatest of all time (GOAT) remains elusive. Instead, there’s a new tag floating around out there: “overrated.” This label has particularly gained traction among frustrated football fans who are quick to criticize rather than celebrate.

Recently, on The Coach JB Show, hosts Jason Brown and Rob Parker took sharp aim at Mahomes, labeling him as massively overrated and even likening him to New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones, a player often derided for inconsistent performances. Their criticism doesn’t hold back, questioning the legitimacy of Mahomes’ hype.

Coach JB didn’t mince words: “The guy’s overrated as sh*t. He is one of the most overrated superstars in the history of professional sports, right alongside LeBron. We see this individual throwing flashy, no-look passes, making it seem like he’s redefining quarterback play. But when you dig deeper, it’s clear he’s not facing the kind of pressures other QBs have to deal with.” He goes on to suggest that real quarterback skills are not just about flair but also about consistent execution, something he feels Mahomes is lacking.

Rob Parker added fuel to the fire, pointing out the surprising similarity between Mahomes’ and Jones’ statistics. He believes fans are more angered at the suggestion simply because Mahomes has three Super Bowl wins under his belt, an accomplishment he argues is more about a team effort than individual greatness.

Time and again, Parker stresses that Mahomes is living off his past achievements at the expense of his current performances, which he feels don’t convey the same prowess they once did. Super Bowl 59, he argues, was a prime example of this biased perception, where Mahomes was presumed to excel just because of his reputation.

“People were upset with me when I said he’s turned into Daniel Jones stat-wise, but the fans for some reason can’t see it,” Parker commented. “A team that goes 15-2 with a quarterback who doesn’t get a single vote for first place in MVP? How does that even happen?”

Despite the Eagles showcasing a more formidable roster, the Chiefs were still labeled as favorites, primarily because of Mahomes. Parker, who confidently predicted the Eagles’ victory, found it bewildering how much faith people still placed in Mahomes, particularly when it was evident that he hasn’t been playing at that elite level for quite some time.

Even MVP voters had taken notice of Mahomes’ struggles this season. He didn’t garner a single first-place vote, which is astonishing considering he steered a team with a remarkable 15-2 record — a statistic that usually promises at least a nod or two in MVP discussions.

Mahomes’ metrics have mirrored those of veteran quarterbacks like Aaron Rodgers and Russell Wilson, both of whom faced severe criticism this season for their underwhelming performances. In stark contrast, Mahomes seems to receive a sort of blind support, which only raises more questions. Although there is a growing acknowledgment of his decline, many continue to overlook it.

Calling a two-time MVP “overrated” feels a bit misguided at best. You don’t just stumble upon three Lombardi Trophies and two MVP awards by sheer luck. While it’s true that Mahomes’ numbers and the excitement surrounding his play have fluctuated, this isn’t so much a sheer downturn in talent as it is an evolution in how he plays — adapting his game to what his team currently needs, rather than regressing.

Let’s be real: the Chiefs have struggled to support Mahomes in crucial areas, like their offensive line and receiving corps. No quarterback, no matter how brilliant, can excel without that essential foundation. Tom Brady had formidable teams supporting him, after all. It’s a team game; Mahomes isn’t equipped to carry the weight of a complete squad on his shoulders alone.

So while questioning Mahomes’ potential being the GOAT might be a fair conversation given the circumstances, it might be premature to slap the “overrated” label on him just yet. There’s a lot more to his story and the ups and downs he’s navigating, and maybe it’s time we all take a step back and reassess what makes a great quarterback in the game of football.
