Defensive tackle Chris Jones from the Kansas City Chiefs is making efforts to assist in the release of a proven culprit who stole chicken wings, by contributing to repay the $1.5 million worth of stolen items.
Allegedly, Vera Liddell, a 68-year-old cafeteria worker who had been employed at a primary school in Chicago for almost ten years, was executing a plan where she unlawfully acquired over 11k cases of chicken wings.
Due to Liddell holding the position of food service director at Harvey School District 152, she was responsible for food procurement. Throughout a period of 19 months (July 2020-February 2022), she managed to steal up to $1.5 million worth of chicken, causing the district to realize the excessive expenditure in the school system.
This was uncovered during a regular audit when the school business manager identified that food expenses exceeded the budget by $300,000, despite several months remaining in the school year, according to WGN.
The chicken wings were intended for a meal kit program funded by the city to distribute to students during school closures amid the pandemic. Regrettably, the students did not receive any as Liddell’s scheme involved using a school van to transport the food elsewhere.

Subsequently, following consecutive Super Bowl victories, Jones agreed to a five-year contract worth $158.75 million ($101 million guaranteed), presumably with the intention of utilizing the extra funds to settle Liddell’s debts to the school district to potentially secure her release from imprisonment.
Nevertheless, as the legal system does not operate in that manner, Liddell will have to complete her nine-year sentence following charges and a guilty plea for theft and running a criminal organization.
