Chad Johnson Calls Out Saints’ Quarterback Struggles While Shannon Sharpe Reminds Him Of Drew Brees’ Legacy

Thanks to a slew of shoulder injuries and a cloud of uncertainty, Derek Carr has decided to hang up his cleats after 11 years in the NFL. For the New Orleans Saints, the departure of both Carr and head coach Dennis Allen represents another chapter of searching for an identity in a post-Drew Brees landscape. For fans who once chanted Brees’ name in the stadium, this transition can feel daunting.

Recently, on the Nightcap podcast, former NFL wide receiver Chad “Ochocinco” Johnson voiced his confusion about the Saints’ future, echoing the sentiments of many who have followed the team’s trajectory. He laid out the reality: not only did Carr’s injuries compromise the team’s prospects, but the way the situation was handled left the franchise in a bind. Johnson pointed out that Carr “knew good and well” he left the team in a tricky position, ultimately pouring salt into the wound for Saints fans who had hoped for a brighter outlook.

While the fanbase may breathe a sigh of relief at the news of Carr’s retirement, there’s an unsettling reality—they still don’t have a clear answer for who will be leading the team going forward. Johnson remarked, “I tweeted the broken heart emoji about Derek Carr being gone, but then I had to remember that people in New Orleans, in Baton Rouge, in Louisiana are probably celebrating. Yet the question looms large: who’s next? Fans are likely to be uneasy until they find a reliable quarterback.”

The implications of Carr’s exit stretch far beyond immediate roster changes. It affects the Saints’ long-term strategy, their potential future wins, and most troublingly, their continuity in the league. Johnson’s co-host on the podcast, Shannon Sharpe, couldn’t help but emphasize how Carr’s shoulder injury mismanagement has cast a long shadow over the team.

He commented on the unfortunate timing of Carr’s injury announcement and suggested that the fear of missing out on what could have been a lucrative contract impacted his decision to step back. “His season was derailed due to injury. At some point, you have to make a tough call—surgery needs to happen, or you risk being out of the game for too long,” Sharpe noted, urging athletes to take their health seriously before it’s too late.

For the Saints’ die-hard fans, Sharpe’s words may sting. He pointed out that the absence of Drew Brees—one of the greatest quarterbacks in league history—has left an emotional gap that’s hard to fill. Fans have become accustomed to winning, and it’s easy to forget that great teams often go through transition phases. “You can’t expect every quarterback to deliver the same kind of magic you had with Drew,” he explained. “You had Brees for 15 years! Look at Green Bay; they’ve had a solid run, but it’s a rare situation.”

What remains clear is that fans are pleased to see Carr go, but that relief comes with a significant caveat: the quest for a quarterback who can rise to the occasion remains ongoing. New Orleans will continue to face challenges as they search to fill the sizeable shoes left by Brees. Until they find their next leader, it’s apparent that the franchise may grapple with uncertainty—an unavoidable chapter in the ever-evolving narrative of the Saints.
